But first, we have to start with the thrilling saga of the Space Race!
The mid-20th century marked a transformative era in human history—an era defined not by the boundaries of our world but by boundless curiosity about what lies beyond. The Space Race, a period of intense rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union, was a quest for cosmic exploration and a dramatic, high-stakes competition for technological supremacy and ideological dominance during the Cold War.

Sputnik: A Beep Heard Around the World

It all began in 1957 with the Soviet Union’s launch of Sputnik 1. This small, beeping sphere—no larger than a beach ball—became humanity’s first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth. The impact was profound, signaling that the Soviets had taken the lead in space exploration. This event spurred a wave of anxiety and determination in the United States, leading to the creation of NASA and igniting a fervent national commitment to catch up and lead.

 

First Moscow Watch Factory: Sturmanskie

The first official watch in space was the Sturmanskie, worn by Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961, during the first human-crewed space flight. Gagarin spent 108 minutes in orbit, completing a full circle around the Earth in the Vostok 1 spacecraft at an altitude of up to 328 kilometers and a speed of nearly 29,000 kilometers per hour.

Gagarin received the watch after graduating from the Orenburg Military Flight Academy in 1957. The timepiece was specially upgraded for the flight to enhance its reliability. After the mission, Gagarin gifted the watch to Air Force Commander Konstantin Andreevich Vershinin, and it is now housed in the museum at the Cosmonaut Training Center.

 

First Swiss watch in Space: Heuer 2915A Stopwatch

John Glenn was the third astronaut to travel to space. On February 20, 1962, he wore a Heuer 2915A stopwatch during his historic Mercury-Atlas 6 flight. The mission launched from Cape Canaveral and lasted 4 hours and 56 minutes. During the flight, he completed three orbits around Earth and reached a maximum altitude of 260 kilometers.

The Heuer 2915A was the first Swiss watch to be taken into space. It was a sports stopwatch capable of measuring time for up to 12 hours with an accuracy of one-fifth of a second. Glenn secured the watch to his wrist strap with a cloth bezel and fastened it over his spacesuit sleeve using elastic straps.

The Moon and Beyond: Omega Speedmaster ref. 105.012

The climax of celestial competition came with the Apollo 11 mission in 1969 when the U.S. achieved what many considered impossible—landing humans on the Moon and safely returning them to Earth. Neil Armstrong’s historic words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” resonated across the globe, marking a monumental victory in the Space Race. This was not merely a technological achievement but a testament to human ingenuity and resolve.

The Omega Speedmaster Professional, often known as the “Moonwatch,” is perhaps the most famous watch associated with space exploration. NASA chose it for all manned space missions after rigorous testing for endurance in extreme conditions. The Speedmaster famously accompanied Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins to the Moon at 02:56 GMT on July 21, 1969, and has been part of every manned NASA mission since the Gemini program.

Interestingly, although Neil Armstrong was the first to step onto the lunar surface, he left his Omega Speedmaster inside the lunar module as a backup because the module’s onboard clock was not functioning. As a result, Buzz Aldrin’s Speedmaster became the first watch worn on the Moon, earning it the nickname “Moonwatch.”
Today, it remains a legendary model in the world of watchmaking.

Rolex GMT Master and “Houston, We Have a Problem”

But no problem for the first Rolex in space. While many people immediately think of the Omega Speedmaster when discussing watches in space—NASA’s official choice—the story of the Rolex GMT Master also deserves recognition for its elegance and precision, particularly during its journey aboard Apollo 13.

Jack Swigert, an American astronaut known for his attention to detail, was not initially scheduled to fly on the Apollo 13 mission. He joined the crew as a late replacement, but his expertise in command module systems quickly became invaluable, especially when the mission faced a catastrophic failure. An explosion had damaged the service module en route to the Moon, making the crew’s safe return NASA’s top priority.

After losing the crystal of his standard Omega Speedmaster during a lunar excursion, Scott relied on his backup— the Bulova Chronograph. Equipped with luminous hands and a tachymeter, it was well-suited for the lunar environment.On his final lunar excursion, Scott wore the Bulova, marking it as the first American-made watch on the Moon. It performed flawlessly under extreme conditions, transforming it into a symbol of reliability.
